Guest post: Breaking down fat, in the non-traditional sense.

My good mate Hagen has been good enough to grace my blog with his literary stylings on the blog's namesake: fat. Thanks Hages, hopefully it's one of many.

Fat – stop getting flustered
Diabetes on the rise, heart disease on the rise, obesity on a never-before seen scale, largely sedentary lives and here I am, ‘bout to tell you to quit your moaning and eat more fat.
The fear-mongering is actually a thing to behold. The entire of the Western World has been moulded into a fat-hating society. And even if you do eat a lot of fat and/or oil, you still probably feel a pang of guilt when you do. How’s that?! A marketing machine – you can’t even eat something without thinking about where, on your body, it will deposit itself. And what’s the solution? Hit the pavement. 5 kms? Maybe 10 if you’ve been really bad! Burn that bulge in what most people find to be the least inspiring of physical activities. Or, get a bike (get run-over?). Or walking. Or any other of the innumerable calorie burning activities. Well hold on to your hips fatties, it’s time to question some long standing assumptions…

Fat is not bad.
Now, it’s fitting that we cover the topic, because as this blog’s title indicates, the offender in question is in fact Cal and mine’s beloved. But where has this all gone wrong?
‘Fat’ is a cheap and easy word we now use to describe a state of being. In its worst case: corpulence or morbid obesity. So from here on out, fat is not an adjective. It is a noun. That’s a start. If you are carrying too many kilos, you are overweight, not fat. What you should be eating for energy, what should comprise the bulk of your caloric intake… is fat. Holy marathon (or not) Batman! And now, quite appropriately, I think it worthwhile to delve into the human body and metabolism.

Lair of the lipid.
What’s a lipid? Not one thing, for starters. Lipids are a group of naturally occurring molecules including fats, waxes, sterols, vitamins (A, D, E and K). They function as stores of energy, cell membranes, and signalling molecules (popular ones include ceramide, sphingosine and retinol). Your body is made up of lipids. Erm, don’t you hate dramatic, simplistic and all-encompassing statements like that? But I digress. Your body is ‘largely’ made up of lipids. Specifically, every cell membrane that makes up your body, is made of lipids. There we go, that’s a little more accurate. There are a lot of cells in your body – there are a lot of lipids in your body. QED. Lipids however, are not the same as that pork crackling I’m dreaming of right now. Those are triglycerides (three glycerol molecules, glued together) and come naturally in two distinct for: saturated and unsaturated. Saturated triglycerides are much more stable – hence solid fat – and unsaturated refer generally to oils. Unsaturated triglycerides have kinks in their carbon chains, don’t pack together so well, are therefore generally liquids and less stable under heat. That aside, any sort of fat we generally consider bad for us. And in today’s standard diet, they are. Sorry folks. Go home. Show’s over. No pork for you.

You know, I bet even in caveman times, Grok was constantly being reprimanded by Grokette for lapping up the bubbling fat on his freshly slaughtered and roast deer. “Grunt grunt grunt, grunt grunt grunt!” Loosely translated: “Grok, leave the fat – you know what the doctor thinks of your eating habits”. Bollocks.
This little sojourn into caveman times brings me to a popular conscience doing the rounds currently – that of the paleo or primal diet. There are bajillions of websites out there – some well-known, some not so – preaching the virtues (and consequences) of such diets. But I think there’s merit to the hype…

Freak out - going Primal.
Now it’s ridiculous to assume we know precisely what humanoids like us ate 200,000 years ago, but these gleaming, sharp incisors of mine suggest strongly it wasn’t just berries, plants and nuts. In fact, go rustle up a steak and tear into it without the aid of modern utensils. I’ll take a punt and guess you’re going at it with them fangs. And rather enjoying it too?! Furthermore, I’m aware of no evidence that demonstrates early humanoids suffered from weight problems (hunched backs, poor posture, and stunted bone growth). On the contrary however, you could easily argue that as pure hunter/gatherers, over-eating was not only never a problem, but never an option. And I would agree. But the probability remains that when they did, as hunters, bring down an animal, or gathers, happen upon carrion, it would have been consumed very quickly, wasting not a morsel. And it’s all meat. And fat. And we’ve been doing it for over 200,000 years*. Altogether now: “yes, that’s plausible”. Plausibility is good. Let’s also say that this was the norm for almost the entirety of this period. Point of contention… “No, no, humans have been farming for ages, so they wouldn’t have had to continue hunting like that”. True, we have been farming for ages. But what is ‘ages’? Records indicate that agricultural farming has been around in an intense form for the last few thousand years*. Ages?
The very first signs of agriculture? Between 20-30,000 years ago*. Ages?!
Homo-genus beings consuming meat? 2 million years*. Ages!
Now for all those evolutionary theorists out there, which period is bigger? And which, do you think, has contributed most greatly to our current evolutionary state? (I’m brimming with anticipation).

Today’s dilemma.
We eat a lot of grain, starch and sugar these days, all of which are products of the last few thousand years – the agricultural revolution, as ‘twere. A time when grain and crop farming exploded; no, Grok didn’t wander through fields of wheat and barley – the stuff we eat today didn’t exist then and it certainly didn’t grow en-masse and definitely didn’t lend itself to set-and-forget bread baking. But we’re told now, after only a few thousand years of heavy carbohydrate consumption, the body has adapted? Gee, that was quick. Tell that to the ever-growing and evermore-aware gluten-intolerant population. Personally, I know no one with an allergy to fat. On the face of it, it looks as though as hue-mans have evolved to eat meat, fat, foraged plant matter and a little bit of fruit (berries) should we have been so lucky. And if this makes sense to you, the bulk of current diets (grains, rice, legumes, starch and sugar) should therefore comprise no part of our biologically ‘correct’ diet. Begs further questioning… why are we encouraged to eat x servings of cereals and whole-grains every day then? The phrase “because it’s healthy!” is starting to look tenuous, at best. Beyond the obvious fact that we’ve been told that our whole lives, why exactly do we believe it? This is where a favourite term enters the fray – ‘Conventional Wisdom’. It is a collective belief, is it not, that these foods are okay for us to eat. You no longer need documentary evidence to believe this, because your mum believes it, her mum believes it and her mum (did) too. Wrong.
Just because we can now cultivate an energy source, does that mean it should be eaten? Just because I can eat as much McDonald’s as I want doesn’t mean I should. Just because I can drive fast doesn’t mean I should. Just because I can smoke and receive health care doesn’t mean I should. Just because I can devour a bucket of Chupa-chups doesn’t mean I should. Just because I can have a muffin doesn’t mean I should. Just because I can eat a whole-grain sandwich doesn’t mean I should. My point? Just because I can eat foods that do not make up my evolutionary heritage, doesn’t mean I should. Nor should you. Far-fetched? Well, think about it… we only live sub-century-long lives, so 10,000 years is a long time. But for evolution to work its magic, 10,000 is no time at all. Like I say, have a think about it.
Here endeth today’s lesson. I shall pack up my collapsible soap-box, have some water to sooth my now-coarse throat, bid you all adue, and return to day-dreams of Meatza. Until next time Herr Doktor.

* DYOR research – there’s so much out there and these are hardly contested facts; plus you know I’ll just link to Wikipedia anyway.

As is customary on "Eat Fat. Be Awesome", a video contribution: might help in the gym as you lift heavy things. If not, good for a laugh (these girls must be drunk! Who the hell told them *that* was a good idea?!)

Workout log catch-up time

Since I filled today's rant quota in my last post about CrossFit, I'm just going to log the last couple of workouts that I've neglected.

Thursday's workout
EXERCISE
 Set #1
 Set #2
 Set #3
 Set #4
 Set #5
 Squat  100kgx5 100kgx5  100kgx5  105kgx5  105kgx5
 Bench Press  75kgx5 75kgx5  75kgx5  77.5kgx4  75kgx5
 Bent Over Row  60kgx5 60kgx5  65kgx5  65kgx5  65kgx5
 Calf Raise Machine  90kgx12 100kgx15  100kgx15 XXXX
Tricep Pushdown (Rope)  18kgx12 18kgx12 XXXXXX
Tricep Pushdown (Bar)  22kgx20 22kgx12 XXXXXX

Ehh the workout felt good at the time, but thinking back on it; it really wasn't that great. My squat didn't improve and my bench actually suffered. The tricep sets at the end felt good at the time, but I didn't feel any pain the next day like I normally get from nose-breakers or dips. The one good thing I did notice from the workout was the bent over rows, I think I've finally locked down good form for these and as such the weight is starting to rise nicely.

Supplements
Pre-workout: Scivation Quake
Intra-workout: Scivation Xtend (grape)
Protein:  Dymatize Elite
Carbs: 10 jellybeans pre-workout for ~30g of dextrose and 15g dextrose/15g maltodextrin post workout.
Nutrient partitioner: Genomyx Slin-Sane - before and after.

 Set #3
 Set #4
 Set #5
 Squat  100kgx5 100kgx5 100kgx5  105kgx5  105kgx5
 Incline Press  45kgx5 45kgx5  45kgx5  47.5kgx5  47.5kgx5
 Deadlift  70kgx10 100kgx5  120kgx5 XXXX
 Assisted Pull up  -12kgx12 -12kgx12  -12kgx10 XXXX
Did I mention I love my weekend fasted workouts? This was no exception. I managed to get a nice improvement on my deadlift with good form and did pull-ups for a change (grip facing out as opposed to in with chin-ups) and even though they had to be assisted on the machine, I got some good DOMS from it today. While we only did 4 exercises, it was more than enough and we must have been in the gym for a good two hours. Good times.

Supplements
Pre-workout: BPI 1.M.R (Watermelon) - A mate of mine gave me a small sampler tub of this to try out because it had too many stimulants for him and he's right, it packs a hell of a kick with the amount of caffeine it contains. I really like my caffeine though so I thought it was pretty good and it gave me a good boost for my fasted training. It does contain a large amount of niacin though and last time I used it I suffered niacin flushes which are quite uncomfortable.
Intra-workout: Scivation Xtend (watermelon)
Protein:  Dymatize Elite
Carbs: 15g dextrose/15g maltodextrin pre and post workout.
Nutrient partitioner: Genomyx Slin-Sane - before and after.

Music
Nine Inch Nails again and I chose this song not just because it's a cool song but its a damn cool video clip too. Enjoy!

Haters gonna hate CrossFit.. and sometimes rightly so.

Before I get stuck in writing about CrossFit, I have good news: THE NBA IS BACK! That's right, the owners and the players came to an agreement (the players got screwed down to a 50/50 revenue split with a bunch of extra conditions) and assuming the new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is signed, we'll have NBA on Christmas Day! And what an epic day of games to be gifted with too:
• Celtics at Knicks, noon ET (TNT)
• Heat at Mavs, 2:30 ET (ABC)
• Bulls at Lakers, 5 ET (ABC)
• Magic at Thunder, 8 ET (ESPN)
• Clippers at Warriors, 10:30 ET (ESPN)

I've currently got plans for Boxing Day (which is Christmas Day where the games are being played) but just try and stop me from watching some ball while eating too many leftovers and drinking way too much. Merry Christmas sports fans!

CrossFit and bodybuilders don't mix
So I've started CrossFit now, I've dropped $100 for a 10 pack of sessions of which I've been to two (and thoroughly enjoyed) and I'm eagerly anticipating the next sessions. However, I haven't mentioned the fact that I'm doing it on a weight lifting/bodybuilding forum that I post on - the reason being that it's generally looked down upon for a few reasons which generally include that it promotes bad form (often referring to kipping chin-ups), high repetitions of Olympic lifts are a surefire way to injury, it makes guys skinny plus a bunch of stupid comments like "crossfit = hipsters of weight lifting". Personally, my goals don't involve getting massive and I want to be able to play sport as well as put on a muscle but I do share some of the concerns regarding form and injury, especially when I see things like this:
Watching that just makes me cringe and I fear for the participant's backs.
In any case, I'm going to keep an open mind while I do the remaining 8 sessions and continue to do my own lifting on the side and see how it works for me. If I don't feel I'm getting the results I want, then I'll stop. Simple.

Monday's WOD (Workout of the day)
3 sets of as many reps as you can do in one minute of the following:
Squat cleans (which will evolve into power cleans after some practice
Shuttle runs
Deadlifts
Burpees
Push-press

Tuesday's WOD
10 sets or as many as you can complete in 30 minutes of the following:
10 chin ups
20 push ups/dips (alternating)
30 sandbag squats (tried with 35kg sandbag but failed miserably and had to use 20kg instead) alternating holding the sandbag in the following positions - front/left shoulder/back/right shoulder

This was so much harder than Monday's workout, I think primarily because I'm not that good at chin ups and so many sandbag squats was just brutal. I finished the push ups on the 7th set when it finally hit 30 minutes.

Music
Since Eminem was on tonight and I really wanted to go but couldn't find anyone to come to Sydney with me for the second show, it's only fitting that I post a track from him and Lil' Wayne. Still kinda bummed that I couldn't go but hopefully I'll see him overseas some day.

Meatza Part Deux

As I mentioned in the last post, the Meatza has made a return and this time with a lot more pictures! For this iteration of the Meatza chronicles, we had a poker night to cater for; so a solitary Meatza would just not do..

Supplies
1.7 lites of vodka, when 700ml will just not to.
It's the Costco brand Kirklands (which also makes my awesome canned chicken) which is made in France and I spent the whole night telling everyone it was just as good as Grey Goose (blergh).
Veggies and additional meat if necessary
You read correctly, 2.1kg of meat for $6.28!
2.1kg of different meat 'end pieces'. But who likes the 'end pieces'? We doooo!

50% kangaroo mince, 50% beef mince, 100% nom
The toppings that survived our snacking are prepared!

 The base
The base, before it was a base!
I seem to have missed taking a photo before it went into the oven but I caught it just after it went in.

.. and just after THEY came out!

The addition of some sugars in the form of tomato paste and chopped tomato was deemed required - Boooo!

So many toppings, so much chilli!

x3!!!!!

 The finished product:
Oh yes.
Meatza for everybody!

They were epic and we only needed two to feed all 5 of us, which left one Meatza for Hagen and I to divide for the next day. I checked and it wasn't just me who finished my half in one sitting the next day.

Music
I really tried to think of something witty and fitting to go along with the posting of this epic meal but the best I could come up with Nine Inch Nails - March of the Pigs. It kind of works but really I've been really digging Nine In Nails this weekend and it's an awesome song and video
Side note: I'm fairly sure I saw this tour and (along with every other time I've seen NIN live) it was awesome. Trent Reznor really bulked up for it too, he must have been eating lots of steak.

Excuses but no apologies.

I've got to rush this post because I want to dedicate a whole entry to tonight's dinner which is to be an epic Meatza (trademark Dittmer 2011) adventure, I won't say more but it's going to be equal parts hedonistic and ketogenic.
While the above is true, the real reason I haven't kept this as updated as I would have liked is due to two, equally weighted excuses:
A) Video games - Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3 have kept me utterly distracted, with good reason - they're pretty awesome.
B) I've been a lazy shmuck.

I'd say that I'm going to endeavor to keep up posts and blah blah blah but that's just setting things up for failure, so I'm just going to keep on top of this a bit more.

 Bench Press  75kgx5 75kgx5 75kgx5 77.5kgx5 77.5kgx5

 Preacher Curl  20kgx12 25kgx12 27.5kgx8 25kgx12XX
Had to wait a good 20 minutes before we could even start the workout today because the damned squat racks were taken up. Not happy Jan. Once we did get started though, the workout was great - bench and rows were strong and felt good. We used a machine for calf raises instead of the psuedo-free weight thing we use and while I'm generally anti-machines, it felt much better as the range of motion feels like it's less easy to slack off. We also did preacher curls for the first time in I-can't-remember-how-long and I was impressed by how much I could push - that said, my forearms hurt like a mother for the next two days.

Supplements
Pre-workout: Scivation Quake
Intra-workout: Scivation Xtend (watermelon)
Protein:  Dymatize Elite with 15g of dextrose and 15g of maltodextrin. Apparently the combination helps nutrients get to the muscles faster, experiments to continue.
Nutrient partitioner: Genomyx Slin-Sane - before and after.

Music
After the horrible, horrible track I posted last time, here's some good rap:

Attempted CrossFit, CrossFit and bad rap music.

Laziness, you will be the death of me. As will video games. Luckily I like eating too much so I'm not as risk of forgetting to eat while playing Elder Scrolls Skyrim, otherwise it would be a distinct possibility.

CrossFit
When we last left, our young hero was eager to try out a new 'craze' called CrossFit, a group exercise club that could loosely be described as bootcamp for fit people with technical exercises. The documentation I have here describes it as:
CrossFit is a strength and conditioning system built on constant varied, if not randomized, functional movements executed at high intensity.
From what I had heard it involves lots of deadlifting, jumping exercises, body weight activities and other fun stuff. My mate Hagen forwarded me a flyer about the Canberra CrossFit club which advertised an Introductory Session that was to happen on the Saturday morning, all you had to do to attend was deposit $25 into their account and send an email indicating you were coming and had paid (writing it now, it sounds oh-so dodgy.. ). So I did just that when I came home from my run on Friday night and went to bed early, looking forward to trying it out the next morning. The next day my trusty GPS led me to the house, which looked slightly deserted, and I could see the 'workout shed' out the back to which the email directed me to which looked equally deserted. Knocking on the door brought no responses with the exception of mental images from Saw and Texas Chainsaw Massacre so I re-reviewed the flyer on my phone for the 37th time and seeing no phone number I could call, I drove angrily to the gym and worked out there instead.

Saturday's workout
After the debacle of thinking I was stuffed around with my CrossFit lesson, I got to the gym in a pretty dirty mood but that quickly lifted after I started to.

EXERCISE

 Set #1

 Set #2

 Set #3

 Set #4

 Set #5
 Squat   95kgx5 95kgx5 95gx5 100kgx5 100kgx5
 Incline Press  42.5kg 45kgx5 45kgx5 47.5kgx5  47.5kgx5
 Deadlift  70kgx10  90kgx5  110kgx5 XXXX
 Chin-Up  12 8  6 XXXX
 DB Bicep curl  12.5kgx5 12.5kgx5  12.5kgx5 XXXX

Not much to really say about this workout, 100kg squat felt just that little bit better as it has every workout since reaching it, as did deadlift but I was a little bummed that I'm not ready to up the weight yet. Chin-ups went down, not too sure why either, so that sucked, too. On a whole it was decent, but eh not great either. I did lose a bit of faith in humanity during this session when I heard at a girl at the gym say to her friend "y'know how, like me and you are, lawyers..". Now I know it makes me somewhat of a hypocrite because I'm been guilty of saying 'like' and even using it too excess when I've drunk to excess, but hearing that sentence made me cringe and die a little a little inside.

Supplements
Pre-workout: MusclePharm Assault
Intra-workout: Scivation Xtend (watermelon)
Protein:  Dymatize Elite with 30g of dextrose.
Nutrient partitioner: Genomyx Slin-Sane - before and after.

Later that afternoon after the workout I received an email back from the guy who runs the CrossFit class who apologised profusely and told me that since he hadn't heard back from anyone (and my email was kind of late on Friday), he had decided to not run the class. He offered to transfer me my money back or to give me a one-on-one introduction to CrossFit personally during the week - which I took him up on and agreed to meet him on Monday evening.

CrossFit Part Duex
So I went back to the Saw-Shed after work and met the guy who runs the Canberra CrossFit club and was pleasantly surprised that rather than the Meathead I had imagined (admittedly whilst sitting grumpily in my car on Saturday morning) running the place, the guy was very genuine and friendly, yet built like a meat-axe (I found out later that he is or was a powerlifter). He explained to me how the club works and the principles they follow (weight lifting classes follow Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength program) and how everything they do revolves around working the core and being functional, i.e. getting stronger as opposed to body building. He explained to me that sessions at the club either consist of strength/weightlifting (Wednesday and Friday) or a 'Workout of the day' or WOD (every other weekday). The WOD's consist of semi-structured programs that may be timed circuits of different exercises, how many sets/reps of an exercise/circuit can you do before failure or 1 Maximum Repetition (MR) training (what's the most you can lift) and other strength/aerobic programs. He then gave me a run through of some different types of squats (box, front and holding a bar above my head), presses (incline, push-press, clean and jerk) and then some deadlifts, all with basically no weight just to check my form and give me some pointers. While I did arrive hoping I would be shown some tips to my form and get right to upping my deadlift amount straight away, in hindsite the way he went about it (i.e. without weight) was much better and has made me more keen to begin. In other words, I was sold after the introduction and starting next week I'm going to try and go to the Mondays and Tuesday WODs instead of gym on Tuesday. Prices seem reasonable and there are different pricing structures you can follow depending on how much you want to attend. I can't wait!

Tuesday's workout:
Nothing gets me more amped for a big gym session than stress at work and lately I've had that in abundance

EXERCISE

 Set #1

 Set #2

 Set #3

 Set #4

 Set #5
 Squat  95kgx5 95kgx5  100kgx5  100kgx5  100kgx5
 Bench Press  72.5kgx5 75kgx5  75kgx5  75kgx5  80kgx5
 BB Bent Over Row  55kgx5 55kgx5  60kgx5  60kgx5  60kgx5
 Incline DB Fly  10kgx12 12.5kgx12  12.5kgx12XXXX
 Seated Calf Raise  70kgx12 80kgx12  85kgx12 XXXX
 Tricep Dips  12 10  8 XXXX

I mixed things up a little with this workout and did box squats onto a bench, which were very different and I was able to ensure that I really squatted deep enough and I did and it hurt. I reached a new personal best with my bench (80kg) too which I was very happy with, though I was only able to complete 4 repetitions before failing. Next time I'm getting the whole five. I also added tricep dips at the end of the session too and it was eye opening to see that I could a whole three sets when a couple of years ago I could even balance my own weight. *happy dance*

Supplements
Pre-workout: VPX Sports - NO Shotgun (Grape Bubblegum). I've been getting quite bored of the pre-workouts that I've been using lately so I figured I use up a sample of NO Shotgun that I had in my desk drawer. Taste is pretty awesome and doesn't have a bitter aftertaste like many seem to have. Seemed to get a pretty good pump with it and my lifts were pretty decent too. Could be worth a purchase in the future when I've finally finished some of my plethora of pre-workout supplements. Yeah, I just used the word plethora and not a pinata was in site, oh wait.
Intra-workout: Scivation Xtend (watermelon)
Protein:  Dymatize Elite with 30g of dextrose.
Nutrient partitioner: Genomyx Slin-Sane - before and after. I'm still not too sure that I can notice a difference with this stuff, but I'm going to keep with it until I've been using it until it's been a full two weeks and then I can empirically say that it did something or not. Again, I'm not having it with a decent amount of carbs so that could have something to do with it, I'll still have enough to run it again next year when I try to add on some decent muscle mass with a normal carb-containing diet.

Music
Aiight (ha!), so I haven't really been listening to music in the gym lately because I've been training with my mate and on Saturday I didn't expect to be in the gym so here's a clip from Fat Joe. My mate told me to check him out because I've been looking for any sort of new music to look out for and ehhh.. not really a fan if I'm truly honest. Some of the stuff on his new album Darksiders Vol 1 is pretty good, but this song kinda sucks.

Progress pics
So 3 weeks down and the pics don't really tell too much at this stage but I've remained at around the same weight and my lifts have gone up, so that's decent... I guess.

Too much jelly.

Curse you Skinny Cow.
No carbs I can deal with. More than deal with actually, I work better without carbs: I feel healthier, have been concentration (most likely because my insulin isn't spiking up and down), my skin seems better and I don't feel bloated for the most. I do, however, really miss sweet foods and when I say miss, I mean I crave them. I won't give in and have sugar so I have to have to make do with artificial sweeteners, like aspartame.  I know they're bad and probably the cause for a bunch of problems which we'll discover when some proper tests are done; but right now, they'll have to do. My real problem, is that I don't do moderation. I buy Skinny Cow Ice Creams  (only 5.4g of carbs per ice cream!) and have to have 2, I buy sugar free lollies and poison myself (over-consumption causes a laxative effect kiddies, not fun) and most lately, sugar free jelly. I recently bought 3 packets of the Sugar-Free Aeroplane Jelly and discovered that you can simply put in both pouches of jelly powder and just under double the required water and make an extra sweet batch. The problem with this is that one batch doesn't make multiple serves as it should; or even as one pouch of jelly powder should. I make it, it sets, it's gone. Woe is me, I just need to stop buying this stuff.
Both packets? Why not?

Anyhoo, enough whinging about my over indulgence, onto the workouts (yes plural, I cbf'd writing two posts for Tuesday's and today's workout, so I'm going to put them both here).

Tuesday's workout
My friend has finaaaaalllly joined up to the gym to come along with me after much procrastinating and a plethora of excuses about things like kidney failure (I kid! I kid!), so I'm going to try and help him get fit and strong for his overseas trip next year.
Note: I'm not a personal trainer and as such have no qualifications, I made him watch movies for all of the tricky lifts (especially Deadlifts) and said up front that I don't feel comfortable in giving advice on such lifts because I won't be responsible for any back injuries besides my own. This is an official record of this fact .
Anyway, as I mentioned in my last post, I haven't been having regular carb-ups because they haven't felt necessary but at the same time I haven't felt like I've been making strength gains as often as I should. Because of this, I did some reading on Targeted Ketogenic Dieting (TKD) (yes I know I still haven't written about exactly what ketogenic dieting is but I'll probably get to it later, sue me) and it seems that having 30-50g of carbs pre/post workout could be just for me as it should supply my muscles with the glycogen needed to power my workouts and subsequent recoveries. So I gave it a shot, a Musashi Growling Dog energy bar before hand and a couple scoops of dextrose and the workout was pretty good. Not as good as Thursday's, but we'll get to that.

EXERCISE

 Set #2

 Set #3

 Set #4

 Set #5
 Squat   95kgx5 95kgx5 95kgx5 95kgx5 100kgx5
 Incline Press  42.5kgx5 42.5kgx5 45kgx5 45kgx5 47.5kgx5
 Deadlift  70kgx10 90kgx5 110kgx5XXXX
 Chin-Up  12 10 8XXXX
 DB Shrug  25kg12 27.5kgx8 25kgx12XXXX
I was able to do 100kg again today and the form was still kind of average but it was a little bit easier than last time. Deadlifts were also pretty good today and the 110kg was decent form with the exception of the last 2 reps. Incline Press was the real winner of this workout as I hit a new personal best (PB for keystroke saving) of 47.5kg and I think I could have even done more, I'm going to start on 45kg next time and see what I can do from there. Chin-ups suck, period.

Supplements
Pre-workout: Scivation Quake
Intra-workout: Scivation Xtend (grape)
Protein:  Dymatize Elite Strawberry + 2 scoops (15g or so) of dextrose
Nutrient partitioner: Genomyx Slin-Sane. This is supposed to help move carbs to where they're needed during and after a workout so I took one of these capsules after my workout but didn't really notice anything. Some people report increased vascularity but they're generally have a lot of carbs, not the small amount that I'm having pre/post. In any case, I'm going to have 1 capsule before and after my workout next time and see how I go.

Thursday's workout
Before this workout I again had some preworkout carbs, this time in the form of the new Blue V energy drink which contains about 35grams of sugar and tastes pretty good. I also had a Slin-Sane capsule and was eager to see if I noticed any effect it had with my workout.

 Set #5
 Squat  95kgx5 95kgx5 95kgx5 100kgx5 100kgx5
 BB Bench Press  72.5kgx5 72kgx5 75kgx5 75kgx5 75kgx5
 BB Bent Over Row  50kgx5 50kgx5 55kgx5 60kgx5 60kgx5
 Triceps Rope Pull-Down  23kgx12 26kgx12 27kgx12XXXX
 Seated Calf Raise  70kgx5 70kgx5  80kgx5 XXXX

Well I can't say I noticed I distinct effect from the Slin-Sane but I can definitely say that the workout was great. I was able to squat 100kg for two sets and besides the last rep of the last set; it felt a lot better and my form was much better, very happy with this. My bench was also up and this may have had something to do with the placebo effect of working out with my friend and having him there to spot me. Next week I think I'll try and do all 5 sets at 75kg (my body weight). I dropped the weight on the bent over row like I said I would and was able to enforce correct form as I wanted but it felt sucky knowing that I had lowered the weight. I didn't use gloves as I normally do for this exercise and my grip was better and incidentally this felt like it helped, curiouser and curiouser - I'll try all 5 sets on 60kg (or more) without gloves next time and see how I go.

Nutrient partitioner: Genomyx Slin-Sane. I had one capsule both before and after my workout and I'm not too sure how much of an effect if any they had. I'll keep doing this for the next couple of weeks and see if they're doing anything. The label does say it is to be had with 'at least 60 to 100 grams of carbs for best effect' preworkout, so the fact that I'm having so little could have something to do with it. We'll see.

Friday's run
This week has been incredibly stressful and filled with missed deadlines, data-loads that don't want to load, miscommunicated business requirements and internal politics. Fun times, not. In any case, I really needed to get out and clear my head. The best way for me to do this, I find, is with a solo run around the lake with some loud, motivating music.
Unfortunately I was a minute slower than last time around the lake but A) that wasn't the main point of the run, B) it was only one minute and C) it was a really enjoyable run and nice and sunny, so whatever; it's all good.

Mr Music
The inspirational running music I mentioned is Rise Against - Appeal to Reason. It's kind of punk-rock with political influences and it really gets me going, so here's a song from the album:

As I've been writing this I've been listening to Pendulum and I think they might have to make an appearance on my next run.

In other news, I'm trying CrossFit tomorrow! Right now though, it's time for bacon!
